ST. PAUL, Minn. — Tani Oluwaseyi scored twice and Minnesota United FC held off a late push to defeat St. Louis City SC 3-2 on Tuesday night in the Round of 16 of the U.S. Open Cup.
Oluwaseyi opened the scoring in the 12th minute, finishing a low cross from Bongokuhle Hlongwane to put the Loons ahead early at Allianz Field. Minnesota doubled its lead in the 34th when Hassani Dotson fired home from outside the box following a loose clearance.
St. Louis responded just before halftime. João Klauss converted a penalty in the 43rd minute after a handball was called in the area, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Oluwaseyi struck again in the 58th minute, finishing a breakaway to restore Minnesota’s two-goal cushion. The visitors made it interesting late, with Indiana Vassilev heading in a corner in the 87th minute, but Minnesota held on through six minutes of stoppage time.
Minnesota United advances to the Open Cup quarterfinals for the third time in club history, and the club will play the Chicago Fire at a date to be named later.
Minnesota United FC outshot St. Louis City 16-12 overall, including 11-4 with shots on goal, and even held a 4-3 edge off cornerkicks.
