WASHINGTON D.C. — Tyler Miller got it done on both ends when it mattered most.

The D.C. United goalkeeper stopped two shots in a shootout and scored the game-winning PK to lead the hosts past Charlotte FC in the Round of 16 of the annual Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

D.C. United advanced on Tuesday night, surviving a dramatic 3-3 draw with Charlotte FC before edging the visitors 2-1 in a penalty shootout at Audi Field.

After his two stops in the shootout, Miller stepped up and blasted home his penalty shot, capping a wild match that saw both teams exchange leads in regulation and extra time.

Kristian Fletcher opened the scoring for D.C. in the 12th minute, but Charlotte FC equalized just before halftime through Enzo Copetti. The visitors pulled ahead in the 67th minute with a goal from Scott Arfield, only for D.C.’s Gabriel Pirani to level it at 2-2 in the 78th.

In extra time, Ted Ku-DiPietro put D.C. United back in front in the 102nd minute, but Charlotte answered once again through Brandon Cambridge’s strike in the 110th to level the game at 3-3.

Both teams missed multiple penalties in the shootout before Miller converted the deciding kick, sending D.C. through to the final eight of the 110-year-old tournament.

D.C. United will face the Philadelphia Union in the quarterfinals at a date to be named later.
