HARRISON, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls rallied twice and then advanced on penalties to the next round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

New York and FC Dallas finished 2-2 after extra time, and the Red Bulls won it from the penalty spot 4-3 to move into the final eight of the tournament.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (first), Noah Eile (second), Daniel Edelman (fourth) and Emil Forsberg (fifth) all converted their penalty attempts, while A.J. Marcucci saved Pedrinho's shot to send New York through.

Shaq Moore, Logan Farrington and Marco Farfan converted FC Dallas’ second through fourth shots in the shootout.

FC Dallas opened the scoring in the 28th minute when midfielder Bernard Kamungo received a pass from Petar Musa and fired a shot into the right side of the net.

The Red Bulls equalized in the 63rd minute when midfielder Dennis Gjengaar laid the ball off for captain Daniel Edelman, whose shot fell to forward Mohammed Sofo. Sofo finished with a low strike into the back of Dallas’ net.

Dallas regained the lead in the 78th minute when midfielder Luciano Acosta found the ball in New York’s 18-yard box and slotted his shot into the upper left-hand corner.

New York found another equalizer in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. Midfielder Emil Forsberg earned a free kick at the top of Dallas’s 18-yard box, and his attempt deflected off a Dallas defender and into the back of the net.

Sofo scored his third U.S. Open Cup goal of the season and his fifth across all competitions. The Ghanaian forward has now scored in four straight U.S. Open Cup matches.

He has recorded six career goal contributions (5 goals, one assist) in four career U.S. Open Cup matches.

The Red Bulls outshot FC Dallas 19-6 overall, but Dallas held a 4-3 edge with shots on goal. New York held a 6-3 edge off cornerkicks.

Forsberg scored his first career Open Cup goal and his sixth of the season across all competitions. He has now scored in back-to-back matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

He has also recorded six goal contributions in his last three matches at the venue. Against FC Dallas, Forsberg has logged three goal contributions in two career matches.

The Red Bulls are now 10-0-4 at Sports Illustrated Stadium in U.S. Open Cup matches.

New York extended its unbeaten streak against FC Dallas to 10 matches and owns a 5-0-3 record against them at Sports Illustrated Stadium.

Defender Kyle Duncan made his 147th career appearance across all competitions, tying Steve Jolley for sixth-most appearances by a defender in franchise history.

Following Wednesday’s match, New York heads to Audi Field to face Atlantic Cup rivals D.C. United on Saturday, May 24. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV in English and Spanish, and New York Red Bulls Radio presented by Sports Illustrated in English via the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
