TEMECULA, Calif. – Taylor Kessler stepped up in the clutch Saturday night.
Kessler scored one minute into stoppage time as So Cal Union slipped past upset-minded Spokane SC Shadow 3-2 in a Women’s Premier Soccer League West Region semifinals match at Temecula (Calif.) Linfield Christian High School.
So Cal Union (8-1-2) will face the California Storm at 7 p.m. July 13 also at Linfield Christian High School.
So Cal Union never trailed and even built an early 2-0 advantage.
Marie Mallow scored in the 15th minute and Marissa Levine followed with a goal one minute later in the 16th minute for the two-goal cushion.
Spokane SC Shadow (5-40) pulled one back when Ella Cotter scored two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first half.
Marissa Garcia netted the equalizer in the 50th minute and defended like crazy until the waning minutes, where So Cal Union’s Kessler stole the show with the lte game-winner.
Gia Kiesling recorded the win in goal by making five saves in seven chances for So Cal Union.
The winners have outscored their opposition 21-12 with four shutouts this season. They also boast a .728 win percentage, have averaged 1.91 goals-per-game and have posted a 1.10 goals-against-average.
The side will have to brace for the historically strong California Storm, which moves into the West Region finals with a 28-5 scoring edge, five shutouts and an 8-1-0 overall record.
