FRESNO, Calif. – There are wild postseason games in soccer. Then there was Sunday’s showdown with San Ramon FC and Fuego U23.
Fifth-seeded San Ramon FC scored 17 minutes – that’s right, 17 minutes – into stoppage time Sunday night as San Ramon FC outlasted host and fourth-seeded Fuego U23 4-3 in The League For Clubs-NorCal Conference quarterfinals Sunday at the Fuego Training Center Facility.
It was Nathaniel Carrasco who sent home the game-winner in the 90+17 to break the tie and help visiting San Ramon FC stay alive and advance to the NorCal Conference semifinals the weekend of June 28-29. San Ramon will face top-ranked FC Davis on the road in Davis, Calif., next weekend.
Gavin House had tied it a 3-3 for Fuego U23 at the 90+5 mark, aiding to the wild finish.
Fuego’s Kevon Garcia staked his side to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 18th minute. Carrasco equalized the game in the 39th minute, as the two teams remained tied at the half.
Fuego took the lead once again in the 65th minute when Isaiah Villalobos sent one home for a 2-1 advantage.
San Ramon’s Adrian Guzman tied it at 2-2 in the 77th minute, then gave his team its first lead at 3-2 when he recorded the brace with a 79th-minute tally.
Both teams scored in stoppage time.
Goalkeeper Romeo Fulcher collected 10 saves in 13 chances for San Ramon FC to gain the win in goal.
San Ramon FC has now outscored its opposition 46-31 this season and improved to 8-3-2 overall. San Ramon FC and Fuego U23 originally tied for fourth in the NorCal standings with 23 points apiece (7-3-2 overall), but Fuego was given the No. 4 seed with a plus-22 on the scoreboard and San Ramon had a plus-14.
Fuego U23 finishes the year 7-4-2 and with a 45-24 scoring edge (42-20 in the regular season).
