Yuba FC shuts down the league's top offensive team to advance to semifinals
OAKLAND, Calif. – Yuba FC scored a goal in each half and took advantage of a red card Saturday night.
The end result was Yuba FC’s 2-0 upset over NorCal Conference second-seeded Oakland SC at Oakland Technical High School.
Yuba advances to the semifinals next weekend against Napa Valley 1839 FC, which advanced with a 3-2 Albion SC Silicon Valley.
Alex Perico scored what proved to be the game-winner in just the 20th minute for Yuba FC, which entered as the No.7 seed.
Oakland SC, which finished second to FC Davis at 10-1-1 in the regular season, picked up a red card in the 48th minute when starting goalkeeper Colin Nestor was sent to the bench for a foul.
Oakland SC, which outscored its opposition 47-18 this season – the most goals scored in the NorCal Conference and the third lowest goals allowed – simply could not get going on the attack and held off the scoreboard for the first time.
Meanwhile, Yuba FC, which entered as the No. 7 seed and has been outscored 35-34 this season, moved to 6-6-1 overall with the upset win and earned the right to visit Nap Valley 1839 FC in the conference semifinals next weekend.
Meanwhile, Hiroshi Yang netted an insurance tally in the 89th minute to put his side up 2-0. Jared Oseguera recorded the clean sheet on eight saves for Yuba FC with defensive help from Perico, Yael Campoy and Angad Bains to shut down the conference’s top offensive team.
Oakland SC did not have the services of Alexandre Bernier, who scored a The League For Clubs and NorCal Conference-leading 23 goals this season. Benier was out for undisclosed reasons.
