WATERFORD, Mich. – Goals were hard to come by so far this season for Walled Lake Western’s girls soccer team.

The goals came in threes Tuesday in the opening round of the Lakes Valley Conference – and against an unusual opponent.

Waterford Mott entered the nine-school LVC tournament as the No. 1 seed, while the Warriors entered as the No. 8 seed.

Walled Lake Western pulsed some serious rank on the Corsairs in the LVC quarterfinals, as the Warriors scored three goals on Mott for the second time this season. This time resulted in a 3-2 victory over the Corsairs in a game that reached overtime and a shootout.

The Warriors prevailed 5-4 on penalty kicks to advance to the semifinals, while Mott – despite winning its first regular season crown in the LVC – were left pondering what happened to its unbeaten league record.

Walled Lake Western (3-6-2) also tied Waterford Mott 3-3 back on April 8 in the early stages of league play. The Warriors entered the game with only two wins and being outscored 20-8.

The Warriors tied for seventh in the regular season standings at 1-5-2 but were given the No. 8 seed based on various variables.

Bella Westbrook scored two goals for Walled Lake Western and her team didn’t miss in the game-deciding shootout.

Abby Ellis had a goal and an assist and Karli Koskinen also scored for Waterford Mott (7-1-4, 5-0-3 LVC regular season), which was sent into the loser’s bracket.

Mott has still outscored the opposition 44-17 this season, but have surrendered six goals to the Warriors in two games. The Corsairs also had a 5-5 non-league draw to Division 3 state-ranked Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, as 11 of their 17 conceded goals came in three contests. All other opponents scored between zero and two goals against Waterford Mott this season.

MORE LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

WATERFORD KETTERING 2, WALLED LAKE CENTRAL 0: Kettering advanced to the LVC semifinals with this shutout win over the Vikings. Avery Topinka finished with a goal and an assist and Savannah Sartorius also scored for the Captain (7-6-2). Kettering has outscored its opposition 36-25 with seven shutouts this season. Walled Lake Central (5-3-5) defeated Kettering 1-0 during the LVC regular season back on April 28.

MILFORD 1, SOUTH LYON EAST 0 (SO): Milford, the defending LVC champs which finished fifth in the regular season this year, advanced on penalty kicks in the LVC quarterfinals contest. The Mavericks posted a 4-3 edge on PKs to edge out the Cougars and advance to the finals. Riley Carlson gained the shutout for Miflord (5-4-3), which posted its eighth clean sheet of the campaign. Ashlyn Lutz, Ani Linson, Lindsay Mitchell and Camryn Budzik converted their penalties to help the Mavericks advance. Milford will host eighth-seed Walled Lake Western in the semifinals.

WALLED LAKE NORTHERN 4, WHITE LAKE LAKELAND 1: Walled Lake Northern scored early and never looked back in a 4-1 victory over White Lake Lakeland in a Lakes Valley Conference girls soccer matchup Tuesday night. Northern (record not provided) opened the scoring in the 6th minute when junior forward Emily Stevens slotted home a low cross from Ava Hernandez. The Knights doubled their lead before halftime on a breakaway goal by senior captain Lauren McKinney. Lakeland cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through the second half on a goal by sophomore midfielder Jenna Walsh, but Northern responded just two minutes later when Stevens netted her second of the night. A late goal from Lily Tran sealed the win for the Knights. Walled Lake Northern controlled possession throughout and outshot Lakeland 13-5, while goalkeeper Sophie Lang made four saves in the win.
