GARDEN CITY, Mich. – The first conference championship in the 2025 girls soccer circles of the state of Michigan is in the record books.
Garden City clinched at least a tie for the Western Wayne Athletic Conference title with its recent 3-1 victory over Dearborn Heights Crestwood.
It marks the third straight year that the unranked Jets have captured the WWAC title – and they did so with three games left. Garden City has now won WWAC crowns in six of the last eight years – and one of the years where the Jets didn’t win was in 2020 when the entire season state-wide was cancelled.
Against Crestwood, Senior Emma Miles finished with two goals and an assist. Junior Maya Edwards added the other goal and sophomore Avery Klemora drew an assist in the WWAC victory. Ava Novack recorded the win in goal.
Garden City is 12-2-1 overall. The only blemishes this season were losses against Division 3 No. 2-ranked Detroit Country Day (4-1) last week and Division 1 Dearborn Edsel Ford (3-1) in the second game of the season. The Jets are 7-0-0 in league play entering this week.
Offensively, Garden City has outscored the opposition 98-11 following an 8-0 non-league shutout of Livonia Churchill on Monday. The Jets have averaged 6.54 goals-per-game.
Garden City also owns 10 shutouts in 15 games and have posted a 0.67 goals-against-average as a team.
Klemola, a talented forward, leads the Jets with 18 goals and 13 assists. But she’s had plenty of help on the offensive end. Miles, a midfielder/forward, has contributed 17 goals and 10 assists, senior forward Paytin Jerome has 12 goals and an assist and sophomore forward Ally Gaines has chipped in with 10 goals and four assists – giving Garden City four players with double digits in goals.
Senior midfielder/defender Kayla Booker has been a consistent player on both ends and has delivered eight goals and eight assists to the attack. Junior midfielder Keira Kryywdzinski has added two goals and 10 assists, freshman midfielder/forward has seven goals and four assists and Edwards, listed as a defender but sometimes pushes up and has contributed four goals and three assists to the high-powered Jets.
Novak may be one of the top young players in the lineup, as the freshman goalkeeper has averaged over 95 percent of the minutes in goal and has posted 10 clean sheets. She has a quality 0.94 goals-against-average, recorded 31 saves in 42 chances, allowed 11 goals, and has registered a save percentage of .739 for Garden City.
