MIDLAND, Mich. — A year ago Midland made a run to the Division 2 regional finals. But in the Saginaw Valley League standings, the Chemics were looking up at Midland Dow the past three seasons.
Now back up in Division 1 enrollment-wise, Midland is state-ranked again and off to one of their best starts in school history. For the time being, the Chemics are now looking down on Dow and the rest of the SVL.
In a showdown between two first-place teams, Midland kept their perfect record intact with a 3-0 shutout victory over three-time defending SVL champion Midland Dow to take over sole possession of first place in the 12-school SVL.
Midland, ranked 11th in Division 1 by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association – watch the April 27 show here on the National Soccer Network at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jkaMDLXA-I – improved to 10-0-0 overall and 5-0-0 in league play and recorded its seventh shutout of the 2025 campaign.
Midland picked up goals from three different players and tightened the grip defensively to blank Midland Dow. The Chemics have outscored the opposition 45-3 overall and to go along with those seven clean sheets have allowed a paltry 0.30 goals-per-game and have averaged 4.5 goals-per-game offensively.
Those numbers are some of the best in the state combining all conferences and divisions, especially defensively conceding just the three goals.
Against Dow (7-2-0, 4-1-0), Midland scored one goal in the first half and tacked on two insurance tallies in the second half to prevail.
Behind a strong defensive effort and goals from three different players, Midland High defeated crosstown rival Midland Dow 3-0 in a Saginaw Valley League girls soccer matchup Monday night.
Senior forward Ella Thompson opened the scoring in the 18th minute for the Chemics (6-2-1, 4-1 SVL), finishing off a feed from senior midfielder Grace Miller. The Chemics held a one-goal lead at the break.
Senior forward Ava Hernandez added a second goal early in the 44th, as she slipped past a pair of defenders and beating the Dow goalkeeper Evie Baldwin with a low shot to the far post.
Midland sealed the win in the 72nd minute when sophomore midfielder Riley Chen headed home a close-range cornerkick from Reagan Vokal.
Midland goalkeeper Lily Morgan recorded six saves to earn the shutout, while the Chemics defense has only allowed three teams to even score on them this season. Dow became the latest victim to be shut down by the stingy Midland defense.
This season under a new coaching staff, Dow slipped into second place in the SVL. The Chargers do own a 36-9 scoring edge this season but were stymied by their arch-rivals this time around.
