UTICA, Mich. – Romeo may not be the most talented girls soccer team in the state of Michigan. But when the state-ranked Bulldogs play one of their rivals in Utica Eisenhower, Romeo seemingly plays like one of the state’s best.

The Division 1 14th-ranked Bulldogs took down defending Macomb Area Conference Red Division champion Eisenhower on its home turf Wednesday via a 1-0 shutout.

The win over the fifth-ranked Eisenhower marks the first time in program history where Romeo has defeated Eisenhower twice in the regular season and also marks the first time that the Bulldogs have ever defeated the Eagles three straight times – all over the course of a 11.5 months..

Romeo defeated Eisenhower 2-1 back in April 21 for the school’s first league win over the Eagles, while back on May 23, 2024, the Bulldogs upset Eisenhower 2-0 in a Division 1 pre-district contest for the first state tournament win over the Eagles.

Romeo improved to 9-3-1 overall but more importantly moved to 6-1-1 in MAC Red Division play, where the Bulldogs have 19 points and sit atop the table with two league games remaining and just ahead of Eisenhower (18 points) in the six-school standings. Romeo has upcoming league games with Utica Ford II and New Baltimore Anchor Bay and can win the title outright with a pair of wins to close out the conference schedule.

Eisenhower (12-2-0, 6-2-0) must win out and hope that some of the other four teams in the MAC-Red can aid a little help with an upset win over Romeo to have a chance of climbing back into the league lead.

Romeo picked up the game’s only goal with 14:20 remaining in the first half. Ball State commit Lydia Hill served a cornerkick into the box and Allison Szalewicz redirected the ball in traffic and into the back of the net.

Romeo's Isabella Stojanovski recorded six saves for the clean sheet –  the team’s sixth of the campaign – to go along with stellar defensive play from the entire team to hold Eisenhower’s vaunted attack off the scoreboard.

Eisenhower owns a 50-9 scoring edge this season, but could only muster one goal against Romeo in that previous meeting last month. The Eagles also have nine shutouts but were shut out for the first time this season on Wednesday.

Romeo has outscored its opposition 24-10 this season with the aforementioned six shutouts and have been shutout twice this season. The Bulldogs’ losses this season were against No. 2-ranked Bloomfield Hills and unranked MAC-Red member Macomb L’Anse Creuse North.

North has been a bug-a-boo against Romeo this season, posting a 1-0-1 record against the Bulldogs.
