SAGINAW, Mich. – Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central did something Friday against Midland that few teams have been able to do against the Chemics this season.
That’s score a goal on one of the state’s top defenses.
Midland conceded a second-half goal to Nouvel, but in the end the Division 1 state-ranked Chemics who were able to post a 4-1 non-conference road win over Panthers.
Elliott Hays scored off a pass from Alahna Beckett in the fourth minute and Beckett added a goal in the 41st to put Midland up 2-0. Ameris Blumenschein assisted on that second tally, which proved to be the game-winning goal.
Nouvel lit up the scoreboard in the 60th minute with a goal by Grace Miller to cut the deficit down to 2-1.
That just awoke a sleeping giant.
Beckett set up teammate Blumenschein with the third goal and Hays booted home the fourth goal for Midland (15-0-0).
The Chemics have now outscored their opposition 65-5 this season, averaging 4.34 goals-per-game offensively. Defensively, Midland owns a stellar 0.34 goals-against-average and 10 shutouts in 15 games. No team has scored more than one goal on the Chemics’ stingy defense – one of the best in the entire state of Michigan.
Saginaw Nouvel slipped to 9-5-1 overall, but the Panthers do load the Tri Valley Conference Blue Division at 3-0-0 this season.
Both Midland and Saginaw Nouvel can clinch conference titles with some wins this upcoming week.
