LANCASTER, Calif. – Av Alta went the distance Tuesday night.
Miguel Pajaro converted the game-deciding penalty shot and Av Alta FC outlasted visiting Orange County FC 3-2 in a match that reached a shootout in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 64 at Lancaster Municipal Stadium.
Tied at 2-2 at both the end of regulation and at the end of overtime, Av Alta FC converted the first four shots of the shootout while Orange County FC made its first two attempts while the side missed its final two attempts as Av Alta FC broke the stalemate with a 4-2 edge on PKs.
After Pajaro Avalta rifled home his PK, Orange County’s Nico Benalcazar misfired on his side’s fourth attempt with a high shot over the crossbar. Previously, Orange County’s third attempt was stopped by Av Alta netminder Emmanuel Alaribe.
Alexis Cerritos, Eduardo Biancas and Sebastian Cruz converted the first three penalties for Av Alta. Cameron Dunbar and Lyam Mackinnon drilled their shots in the shootout for Orange County.
Gaining the win in net, Alaribe notched two saves in regulation and the shootout and had the one crucial save in the shootout.
Orange County held a narrow 13-10 shots advantage through 120 minutes, including 5-4 with shots on frame.
Ousmane Sylla staked Orange County to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Av Alta equalized the game at 1-1 on a 67th minute goal from Luca Mastrantonio and took a 2-1 advantage in the 75th minute off a goal by Alaribe.
Mouhamadou War tied the game at 2-2 in the 8rd minute which set the stage for a scoreless Colin Shutler took the loss in goal for Orange County with three saves.
