PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Rhode Island FC continued their strong start to the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Portland Hearts of Pine on Wednesday night at Beirne Stadium.

The difference maker was a late game-winner from Aaron Bellamy, who sent one home in the 83rd minute, to help Rhode Island FC advance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The match began with high energy on both ends, but it was Rhode Island who struck first in the 18th minute. Midfielder Diego González found space at the top of the box and curled a left-footed effort past Portland goalkeeper Eli Carruthers to give RIFC the early lead.

Portland responded well, pushing forward with purpose and finally broke through just before halftime. In the 42nd minute, striker Malik Thompson capitalized on a defensive miscue, slotting home a low finish to level the match at 1-1 going into the break.

The second half saw both teams exchange chances, with Portland nearly taking the lead in the 65th minute when Luca Emerson struck the crossbar from distance. But it was Rhode Island who would have the final say.

In the 83rd minute, substitute winger Jalen Reeves made an instant impact. After a clever one-two on the left flank, he whipped in a dangerous cross that deflected off a Portland defender and fell kindly to Aaron Bellamy, who poked it in from close range to put RIFC up 2-1.

Despite a late push from the visitors, Rhode Island held firm through stoppage time to secure the win and improve their home record.

“It wasn’t perfect, but we showed resilience,” said Rhode Island head coach Khano Smith after the match. “These are the kinds of gritty games that help build character in a team.”

Rhode Island FC (now 3-1-2) will look to build on the momentum when they travel to face Lexington SC next weekend. Portland Hearts of Pine (1-2-3)
