PAPILLION, Neb. — Union Omaha pulled rank on Tuesday.
Union Omaha continued its impressive U.S. Open Cup run with a dramatic 2-1 victory over USL Championship side San Antonio FC Tuesday in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The match at Werner Park saw the USL League One champions take an early lead in the 22nd minute through a well-placed header by forward Pedro Dolabella, capitalizing on a precise cross from Joe Gallardo. San Antonio FC responded in the 38th minute when midfielder Jorge Hernandez curled a free kick into the top corner, leveling the score at 1-1.
The second half was a tense affair, with both teams creating opportunities but unable to convert. The deadlock was broken in the 85th minute when Union Omaha's substitute Lagos Kunga fired a low shot past San Antonio's goalkeeper Richard Sanchez, securing the win for the home side.
Union Omaha's goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu made several crucial saves to preserve the lead, showcasing his shot-stopping abilities. The victory marks Union Omaha's advancement to the Round of 32, where they will face an MLS opponent.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team's performance tonight,” said Union Omaha head coach Dominic Casciato. “We showed resilience and determination against a strong opponent, and the support from our fans made a significant difference."
San Antonio FC’s head coach Alen Marcina acknowledged the challenge posed by Union Omaha, stating, “Credit to Omaha for their performance. We had our chances but couldn’t capitalize. We’ll regroup and focus on our league campaign.”
Union Omaha's victory adds to their growing reputation in the U.S. Open Cup, having previously defeated El Paso Locomotive FC in a penalty shootout in the Second Round.
