MATTHEWS, N.C. — Survive and advance. That’s exactly what North Carolina FC did on Tuesday night – and against an in-state rival.

Rodrigo Da Costa netted the brace, including the game-winning goal, and North Carolina FC advanced to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating Charlotte Independence, 3-1, at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex.

NCFC rallied back after trailing 1-0 early in the second half.

Charlotte quickly grabbed a lead in the second half after Jon Bakero got past North Carolina FC Akira Fitzgerald but the lead was short-lived.

In the 70th minute, Oalex Anderson found the back of the net for his first goal of the season to get NCFC on the board and tie the game at 1-1.

Da Costa netted his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute to give NCFC the lead and completed his brace just three minutes later with a 76th minute tally to cap the scoring.
