LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP: Da Costa nets brace as North Carolina FC advances past in-state rival Charlotte Independence

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Survive and advance. That’s exactly what North Carolina FC did on Tuesday night – and against an in-state rival.
Rodrigo Da Costa netted the brace, including the game-winning goal, and North Carolina FC advanced to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating Charlotte Independence, 3-1, at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex.
NCFC rallied back after trailing 1-0 early in the second half.
Charlotte quickly grabbed a lead in the second half after Jon Bakero got past North Carolina FC Akira Fitzgerald but the lead was short-lived.
In the 70th minute, Oalex Anderson found the back of the net for his first goal of the season to get NCFC on the board and tie the game at 1-1.
Da Costa netted his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute to give NCFC the lead and completed his brace just three minutes later with a 76th minute tally to cap the scoring.
UP NEXT
NCFC returns to regular season play on Saturday, April 19, traveling down to South Florida to face Miami FC at 7 p.m. ET at FIU Pitbull Stadium. Miami currently sits in 11th place in the Eastern Conference table at 1-4-0 (3 points). This match will be streamed on ESPN+.
