AMERICAN FOLK, Utah – there’s plenty of reasons why the Utah Surf are ranked No. 1 in the nation for teams in the Women’s Premier Soccer League.
Plenty.
But there’s one main reason – this team knows how to finish.
Behind a vaunted offensive attack, the Surf are off to a 4-0-0 start, including a 10-0 shutout over Griffins FC in a WPSL-Mountain Conference contest at American Folk (Utah) High School.
McKenzie Evans scored the first two goals in the second and 24th minutes to stake the Surf to the early 2-0 advantage. Savier Schlosser added a goal in the 27th minute as the Utah Surf settled for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Then the floodgates opened.
The Utah Surf tacked on seven more goals after halftime, including one one minute into stoppage time and never took their foot off the pedal.
Evans added an assist and Schlosser finished with a goal and three assists but 11 different players picked up at least one point in the rout.
Emma Granthem netted the brace, while Carli Dare, Latava Brost, Tessa Thorton and Julia Arba also scored. Kelsey Harmer, Chelsea Campbell and Brooklyn Smith picked up single assists for the Surf.
Utah has outscored the opposition 24-0 during its three games and sit atop the Mountain Conference.
Kate Borgmeir picked up the clean sheet against Griffin FC and was rarely tested in the game, where Utah’s defense held tight once again. Sarah Newman recorded clean sheets in the Surf’s first three shutout wins.
The Surf also defeated City SC Utah (4-0), Griffins FC (6-0) and MetaSport (4-0) this season.
