COLUMBUS, Ohio – Two starts, two impressive wins.
Less than a week after knocking off No. 2-ranked FC Dayton 4-1, the Columbus Eagles FC were back at it again Friday night at Columbus Fortress Obetz Sports Complex and rallied for a 5-1 victory over Michigan-based Corktown WFC in WPSL-Great Lakes Conference Great River Division play.
Columbus (2-0-0) conceded an early goal but had the last laugh in scoring five unanswered goals after trailing 1-0.
The Eagles finally got untracked in the second half and netted an equalizer in the 58th minute when Lexi White put one into the back of the net.
Nikki Cox, who finished the night with a hat trick, scored what proved to be the game-winner with an unassisted goal in the 73rd minute. That goal opened up the floodgates as four of the Columbus goals came in the final 17 minutes of play.
Cameryn Susey tacked one onto the scoreboard in the 77th and then two minutes later in the 79th Cox scored her second goal of the contest to put her team up 4-1.
Cox, a former Bowling Green State University standout, later capped the scoring in the 90th minute for the Columbus Eagles
Mia Thompson scored a goal in the sixth minute to stake Corktown (0-1-1) the early 1-0 lead. The club led at the halftime break couldn’t withstand the pressure by the Eagles and eventually succumbed in the end.
Secora Johnson gained the win between the pipes on the strength of six saves for the Columbus Eagles FC, who have now outscored the opposition 9-2 and are dominating on both ends of the field.
After registering a 0-0 draw in its opener against Beadling Soccer Club on May 18, Corktown WFC slipped to 0-1-1 overall and have been outscored 5-1 this season.
