CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Being in the spotlight for a season-opening game might be a distraction for some. But for Chattanooga FC they collectively savored the moment.
In fact, Chattanooga was in mid-season form Friday night as the club recorded a resounding 5-0 shutout of visiting UFA Gunners at Finley Stadium in a Women’s Premier Soccer League-Southeast Conference Peachtree Division clash.
The match was the WPSL Week 3-Game of the Week and in front of a national audience on the National Soccer Network, Chattanooga FC (1-0-0) did not disappoint.
The hosts opened up a 3-0 halftime lead and tacked on two more insurance tallies in the second half to grab the three points in convincing style.
While goalkeeper Maddie Smith (five saves) and her stout back line limited UFA Gunners scoring chances and eventually recorded the clean sheet, the Sky Blues were firing on all cylinders offensively.
Reese McDermott opened the scoring with a goal in just the third minute for a 1-0 lead and set the tone under the spotlight.
Kennedy Ball scored the next two goals in the 18th and 34th minutes, respectively. She flicked in a cross from Hannah Tillett on the second goal of the game while her second individual tally was unassisted and opened up a 3-0 advantage by the break.
In the second half, McDermott was back at it again with a 59th minute goal, while Annalisa Vincent capped the scoring by putting the ball into the back of the net in the 85th following a serve from Elisa Dean.
The Sky Blues will host the Georgia Impact on May 30 with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Finley Stadium.
Elke Travis made eight saves in 13 chances for UFA Gunners (0-2-0), which remained winless and scoreless after two matches. The Gunners will host Decatur FC on May 30 at 7 p.m.
