MWPL: Walter’s 73rd-minute goal helps Holland Rovers slip past arch-rival Tulip City

HOLLAND, Mich. – Seth Walters had the perfect opportunity Friday night and he buried it.

Walters, the St. Joseph High School grad and current Hope College forward, came through in the clutch, as his go-ahead goal came in the 73rd minute and the host Holland Rovers held off arch-rival Tulip City 2-1 in the Midwest Premier League-Great Lakes West Division clash at MAC Bay Soccer Stadium.

After a teammate was clipped up just outside the box on the left side, Matthew Davidson sent a bending free kick into the mixing bowl and Walters was there at the doorstep in traffic to knock home the game-winning tally during a wild goal-mouth scrum to put the Rovers up 2-1.

Defensively, the Holland Rovers defense made that late goal stand as they moved to 2-0-1 overall on the season with a 4-2 scoring edge this season.

Down 1-0 at the half, Tulip City (0-3-0) began to play far more aggressive in the second half, where they held a 15-6 shots edge, including 9-3 with shots on frame, and even posted a 7-4 edge off cornerkicks in the second half. The pressure paid off when Colin Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville Unity Christian / Calvin College) tucked home a close-range rebound following his own shot in the 54th to level the game at 1-1.

Holland Rovers goalkeeper Jon Hogsten (Holland Christian / Hope College) was brilliant between the pipes, finishing with eight second-half saves – including three point-blank range diving stops – to keep the game tied.

His teammates ended up netting the game-winner down the stretch.

The Holland Rovers went ahead in the 25th minute when Walters slotted a pass in tight space where Daniel Arrellano (Holland / Muskegon Community College) made a run in the box before one-timing a low shot inside the far left post for a 1-0 lead.

The Rovers carried much of the play in the first half, resulting in a 10-2 shots edge over the first 45, including 8-1 with shots on goal, but couldn’t extend the lead further before the break.

Tulip City ended up with a 17-16 overall shots advantage in the match, but the Rovers held an 11-10 edge with shots on frame. Both teams collected eight cornerkicks in the contest.
