In Matchday 3 of Group E, three teams advanced, with Ecuador and Ivory Coast earning victories. Ecuador shocked the world when they defeated Germany 2-1, while Ivory Coast moved into the knockout stage for the first time with a 2-0 win over Curaçao.

Ecuador vs. Germany -

The matchup of the day had to be Ecuador vs. Germany. Germany wanted to shake off any concerns from its last-minute win over Ivory Coast, while Ecuador wanted to prove it was better than the performance that led to a 0-0 draw against Curaçao in each team's respective Matchday 2 game.

Germany got off to a great start despite some serious controversy surrounding its goal in the 2nd minute. On an early throw-in, Pavlović caught Vite in the face with his boot as the ball ended up going to Sané, who put it into the back of the net. The Ecuadorian players, coaches, and fans were furious as the referee upheld the goal after the review, and no disciplinary action was taken against Pavlović.

Ecuador, though, was able to channel that emotion just seven minutes later when Vite won the ball off Nmecha's foot and quickly passed it to Angulo, who slipped it past Neuer for Ecuador's first goal of the World Cup.

Germany created multiple chances in the first half, including a shot just wide by Nmecha in the 14th minute and a header from Havertz that was comfortably gathered by Galíndez. Even after the water break, Germany continued to threaten the goal, missing wide twice within three minutes and again in stoppage time through Wirtz, leaving the match tied 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Ecuador got the first real chance in the 62nd minute after a great buildup, but Neuer showed why age was just a number by making a terrific punching save. Then, in the 73rd minute, he once again disrupted the play before the German defense cleared the danger, a trend that continued over the next several minutes as Ecuador piled on the pressure.

The winning goal came in the 77th minute when Ecuador was awarded a corner. Plata got a toe on the cross right in front of Neuer and redirected it into the net, giving Ecuador its first lead of the tournament. Ecuador held on to win 2-1, earning its first victory while handing Germany its first loss of the tournament.

Curaçao vs. Ivory Coast -

Ivory Coast entered the match after suffering a heartbreaking stoppage-time loss to Germany the previous weekend, while Curaçao came in off a draw that secured the nation's first-ever World Cup point. The stakes were high, as the result would help determine the knockout-round standings.

Ivory Coast got on the board early when Pépé received a pass from Diomandé and fired it into the back of the net. It was exactly the kind of start Ivory Coast needed, and the finish was excellent.

Ivory Coast wasn't content with just one goal. In the 10th minute, Diallo found room to run and reached the top of the box, but his shot missed the target. Curaçao got a chance four minutes later, but Gaari's effort also went wide.

In the second half, Kessié had an opportunity for Ivory Coast, but his shot deflected harmlessly wide. Curaçao answered with a chance of its own, but Floranus' shot sailed just over the crossbar after he created some excellent space for himself.

Ivory Coast doubled its lead in the 64th minute when Pépé received a perfectly weighted pass from Sangaré and calmly finished to make it 2-0.

Curaçao had the majority of the late chances in the second half, but it could not find a way to break through. Its best opportunity came in stoppage time when Antonisse got free, but his shot went wide. Moments later, Floranus had what looked like another promising chance wiped out by an offside call.

These results meant Germany won the group with six points. Ivory Coast finished second, also with six points, but its loss to Germany prevented it from winning the group. Ecuador finished third with four points, while Curaçao placed fourth with one point. Germany, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador advanced to the knockout round and awaited their opponents.
