Algeria Defeats Jordan 2-1 In Group J Clash

Group J provided two great games for fans to enjoy on Monday June, 22nd. After Lionel Messi became the all-time leading scorer at the World Cup, Algeria and Jordan battled it out later that night in San Francisco. With a defeat, Jordan is unable to advance to the knockout round and their World Cup journey will come to an end after the group stage wraps up.
However, the Jordanians did not go out without a fight. Nizar Alrashdan opened the scoring in the 36th minute to put Jordan up 1-0. This lead would hold through halftime and with about 20 minutes left, Nahdir Benbouali evened it up for the Algerians.
With 20 minutes left to play, and a 1-1 score the game could go either way. In the 82nd minute, Amine Gouiri put Algeria ahead 2-1. This lead would hold and when the final whistle blew, Jordan’s World Cup dream came to an end while Algeria still has a chance to battle for second place in the group.
With such a thrilling game, let’s take a look at the stats and see what they have to say. Possession heavily favored Algeria, with the Algerians controlling the ball 62% of the game while Jordan only managed to possess the ball for 27% of the match. The shots also heavily favored Algeria 17-8. Algeria had as many shots on target as Jordan had all game. Both teams picked up one yellow card each while Algeria remained the more composed team, committing six fouls to the eleven committed by the Jordanians.
Both teams are back in action on Saturday June 27th. Algeria and Austria will battle for second place in the group with a 10:00 pm kickoff in Kansas City while Jordan travels to Dallas to take on Argentina for a 10:00 pm kickoff.
