LOS ANGELES, CA — Iran took a major step toward the knockout rounds Sunday afternoon, earning a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Belgium behind a standout performance from goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and a disciplined defensive effort that frustrated the Group G favorites.

Belgium entered the match needing a response after its opening draw with Egypt, but for the second consecutive match the Red Devils struggled to turn possession into goals. Iran, meanwhile, arrived with confidence after rallying twice against New Zealand and looked comfortable absorbing pressure while waiting for opportunities on the counterattack.

The first major moment of the match appeared to belong to Iran in the 25th minute. Mehdi Taremi found the back of the net after a well-taken penalty kick, sending the Iranian supporters into celebration. The joy was short-lived due to a VAR review that determined Taremi had been offside during the buildup, keeping the match scoreless.

Belgium controlled much of the possession from that point forward and peppered the Iranian defense with attacks. Despite Kevin De Bruyne orchestrating attacks from midfield and Maxim De Cuyper repeatedly finding space on the left side, every Belgian opportunity seemed to end with Iranian goalkeeper, Alireza Beiranvand standing in the way.

Beiranvand produced several excellent saves throughout the afternoon, including a point-blank stop on De Cuyper that may ultimately be remembered as one of the tournament's best saves. Belgium continued to probe but could never find the decisive breakthrough.

The match took another turn in the 66th minute. Nathan Ngoy misplayed a pass near midfield, allowing Taremi to break through on goal. The Belgian defender hauled down the Iranian striker as the last man back and was immediately shown a red card, leaving Belgium to finish the final portion of the match with ten players.

The Iranians pushed forward more aggressively over the final twenty minutes, but neither side managed to create the winning moment. Belgium still generated chances despite being down a man, while Iran remained dangerous whenever Taremi found room to run behind the defense.

By the final whistle, Iran had secured another valuable point and extended its unbeaten start to the tournament. Belgium, meanwhile, left Los Angeles wondering how a talented attack that was expected to dominate Group G has produced only one goal through two matches. For Iran, the result keeps qualification firmly within reach ahead of a decisive final matchday. Belgium remains alive as well, but the margin for error has disappeared.

Looking ahead: Group G concludes June 25 with Iran-Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle and Belgium-New Zealand at BC Place in Vancouver. Iran sits in a strong position to advance, while Belgium will likely need a victory to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
