ROMEO, Mich. – Union FC Macomb secured a huge signing Thursday for its inaugural season.

The USL W League side signed University of Texas standout and Michigan native Amalia Villarreal to play for Union FC Macomb in 2025, pending league and federation approval. Union will play all home games at Romeo High School.

One of the most decorated youth players in the United States in the graduating Class of 2024, the 5-foot-2 Villarreal brings in a multitude of accolades on her resume to the Michigan-based Union FC Macomb, which is making its debut campaign in 2025. Union’s men’s team, which competes in the USL League Two, began play in 2024.

Villarreal, an attacking midfielder and forward who is finishing up her freshman school year at the University of Texas, hails from Lansing, Mich., and attended Lansing Sexton High School. She grew up playing in the youth system with the Michigan Jaguars Girls Academy and also spent some time with the Texas-based Solar Soccer Club Girls Academy. Villarreal was amongst the leaders in goals, assists and points each school year with the Michigan Jaguars.

While she earned numerous postseason accolades with her club teams, she also shined bright with the U.S. Youth National Team in her age group. Villarreal helped the United States win the U17 CONCACAF Championships and finished as the bronze medalist at the 2023 Pan American Games, where she led the U.S. side with four goals and two assists.

She also won a United Women’s Soccer (UWS) National Championship on the women’s amateur stage with the Michigan Jaguars Pro team in 2023, the summer between her junior and senior years of high school.

Coming out of high school, national websites TopDrawer Soccer.com and PrepSoccer.com both ranked Villarreal as a top 10 prospect in the Class of 2024.

This past season with Texas, Villarreal continued to add to her resume. After competing in 24 games and making 20 starts for the 17-4-2 Longhorns, she finished the campaign with 10 goals, eight assists and 26 points and ranked amongst the top college freshman players in the country. Her freshman campaign ended in an NCAA Division I tournament loss to Michigan State University (3-2 in overtime).

Villarreal earned plenty of postseason honors after the 2024 collegiate season, as she was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Freshmen Best XI, United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team, Southeastern Conference (SEC) Freshman of the Year and All-SEC Second Team. During the regular season, Villarreal  was twice named SEC Freshman of the Week.
