BELGRADE, Serbia – Could the United States be the hosts of the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup?
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced Thursday in a press release that the United States is the sole bidder for the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup, positioning the nation as the expected host for the tournament.
Speaking at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Infantino stated, “The only bid for 2031 was from the USA and potentially some other CONCACAF members together.”
This development follows the joint decision by the United States Soccer Federation and the Mexican Football Federation in April 2024 to withdraw their bid for the 2027 Women's World Cup in favor of pursuing the 2031 edition. The shift was influenced by the proximity of other major events, including the men’s 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
U.S. Soccer released an official press release Thursday echoing the likelihood of being a host of the 2031 event. The U.S. previously hosted the event in both 1999 and 2003.
“We are excited about the opportunity to co-host the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup and, in collaboration with our Concacaf partners, are committed to delivering a tournament that leaves a lasting legacy – one that elevates women's soccer across the world and inspires future generations of players and fans,” U.S. Soccer said in their statement on Thursday.
“As FIFA finalizes the number of participating teams in the tournament, we will solidify our partnership structure with fellow Concacaf nations. We look forward to sharing more details and unveiling our full vision for the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup in the near future.”
FIFA has also announced plans to expand the Women's World Cup from 32 to 48 teams starting in 2031, aligning with the men's tournament expansion set for 2026. The 2031 Women’s World Cup will be the 11th edition of the event.
Formal bid documents for the 2031 tournament must be submitted by the end of April 2025, with the final host selection scheduled to take place during the 76th FIFA Congress in 2026.
In terms of the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – is the sole current bidder for that event.
