CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Chattanooga FC and Chattanooga Red Wolves SC faced off for the first time in a competitive match during the Second Round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night.
The match proved to be worth the price of admission.
The Chattanooga Red Wolves outlasted MLS Next Pro II member and arch-rival Chattanooga FC Tuesday night, 2-1, earning the deciding marker with a 5-4 advantage in the penalty kick shootout in the Chattanooga Derby in front of 12,131 fans at Finley Stadium.
The game featured the fourth largest crown played in Chattanooga FC history.
Ricardo Jerez made two saves in regulation and overtime and came through in the clutch by turning aside Chattanooga FC first shooter, Daniel Todorov Mangarov, in the shootout for the Chattanooga Red Wolves.
That save proved to be more than crucial.
Jerez's teammates all converted their chances in the shootout – Matt Bentley, Zavier Varquez, Jonathan Filipe, Pedro Hernandez and Owen Green scored in succession – and the Red Wolves advanced to the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in dramatic fashion.
Robert Screen, Markus Naglestad, Farid Danilo Sar-Sar Cairo and Ethan Dudley converted their PKs for Chattanooga FC, but the MLS Next Pro-II side could not overcome the deficit during penalties.
Omar Hernandez put the Red Wolves up 1-0 in the seventh minute only to see Chattanooga FC equalize in the 19th minute off a goal by Mangarov. The stalemate remained for the rest of regulation and overtime.
Jerez picked up the win in goal for the Red Wolves. Eldin Jakupovic registered three saves for Chattanooga FC.
Chattanooga FC held a narrow 13-12 shots edge overall, with the Red Wolves claiming a 4-3 edge with shots on goal. Chattanooga FC also held a 8-5 advantage off cornerkicks and even held a 64-36 advantage in possession only to come up empty-handed.
The Red Wolves advance to the third round for the second consecutive season and will learn its next destination later this week.
