PITTSBURGH — King’s Hammer FC scored twice in the opening 30 minutes and held off a late charge to defeat Detroit City FC 2-1 in the USL W League Round of 16 on Thursday night.
Ava Thomas put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute, converting a low cross from the right wing. Just 16 minutes later, Emma Ward doubled the lead with a powerful strike from the top of the box following a failed clearance.
Detroit City pulled one back in the 74th minute as forward Jordyn Walker found space and finished off a through ball from Ella Turner. The Le Rouge visitors couldn’t find an equalizer despite heavy pressure in the final minutes.
With the win, Valley Division champion King’s Hammer (8-0-3) advances to the USL W League quarterfinals in Pittsburgh where the side will face the unbeaten Minnesota Aurora at 7 p.m. Sunday also at Highmark Stadium. Cincinnati-based King’s Hammer owns a 40-11 scoring edge this season.
Detroit City FC, which rallied late in the final week to claim a second straight Great Lakes Division championship, ended its season with a 20-8 scoring edge and a 7-3-1 overall record. Detroit City FC advanced to the USL W League Final Four last season.
