PEORIA, Ill. — After finishing as the USL League Two North American runner-up last season and starting the 2025 campaign with an unbeaten record, it’s safe to say that Peoria City is humming along as a sweet tune.
Peoria City made Springfield FC its latest victim on Tuesday with a 6-0 Great Plains Division victory at Shea Stadium and the next day the club was rewarded with Peoria City being ranked No. 1 in the ULS League Two Power Rankings Top 20.
The start could also place a huge target on the backs of the Carp. Either way, Peoria City is currently in mid-season form and now stands at 5-0-0 and atop of the Great Plains Division with 15 points.
The Carp have outscored the opposition 14-2 through five league games, and are averaging 2.8 goals-per-game while holding opponents to a paltry 0.40 goals-per-game.
Springfield FC didn’t pose much of a threat in the two teams’ meeting Tuesday at Bradley University. Peoria City sprung a 2-0 halftime advantage on the visitors, while the Carp tacked on four more second-half tallies to win going away.
Luke Persenico scored what proved to be the game-winner in just the 14th minute and finished with the brace on the evening. Dijibognihou Koulai upped the lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute when he booted home his fourth goal of the season.
In the second half, Persenico netted his second goal in the 48th minute, while teammates Wesley Gibson (64th) and Hector Medrano (77th and 83rd minutes) also provided second half tallies for the unbeaten Carp. Koulai, Gibson, Jamaine Meijas and Tommy Coughlin picked up assists in the game for Peoria City.
Samy Slimi recorded the shutout for Peoria City, which recorded its third straight clean sheet and third overall on the season. Jeremy Saygbe, Gibson, Quinten Blair and Alejandro Valverde comprised the Carp’s starting backline and simply helped shut down Springfield FC, which slipped down to third place with a 3-2-0 record.
