KENTWOOD, Mich. – Midwest United FC delivered the Flint City Bucks a taste of their own medicine Wednesday night.

The two-time defending Great Lakes Division champion Bucks had not conceded a goal this season, picking up three wins and a 6-0 scoring edge in division play.

That is, until Wednesday night.

Midwest United played host to the Bucks at the Midwest United Soccer Complex in Kentwood and walked off the pitch with an impressive 2-0 Great Lakes Division victory over previously unbeaten Flint City..

It marked the Bucks’ first taste of defeat since they fell 1-0 to Peoria City during last year’s Central Conference finals, which was the Elite Eight of the USL League Two postseason.

A year ago, the Flint City Bucks finished 10-1-3 in league play to qualify for the USL League Two postseason. The Bucks held a 39-16 scoring edge last season, showing that they rarely gave up more than one goal a game. Midwest United FC finished second in the division to also qualify for the postseason.

Now this season every team in the eight-team Great Lakes Division has at least one loss thanks to Midwest United’s ability to solve the Bucks riddle and put up a two-spot on the scoreboard while keeping Flint City scoreless for the first time this season.

Beau Hudd (Davenport University) recorded the clean sheet in goal for Midwest United after making six saves. He also received some fine defensive play from his back line of Patrick O’Toole (University of Michigan), Christian Shannon (Western Michigan University) and Ben Adamson (Saginaw Valley State University grad).

On the offensive end, Midwest United (3-2-0) scored two first-half goals and hung on for the shutout in the second half. Midwest United now owns an 11-5 scoring edge after five games – the most goals scored in the Great Lakes Division this and one of 31 clubs across North America that have scored 10 or more goals this season – and moved into third place in the division behind the league-leading Bucks (3-1-0, nine points).

League newcomer Northern Indiana (2-1-0, six points), Midwest United FC (3-2-0, nine points), Union FC Macomb (3-2-1, 10 points) are also in the top half of the league, although Union has played six games, Midwest United five games, Flint City four games and Northern Indiana three games thus far. Each side will play 14 division games in the Great Lakes Division.

Eron Sylejmani (Richland Gull Lake HS / Western Michigan University) staked Midwest United to a 1-0 lead with a 10th minute goal. The tally would later stand up to become the game-winner.

Vitalis Takawira (Davenport University) netted an insurance tally for Midwest United FC with his 36th minute goal.

Midwest United also had a second-half goal called back.

It marked the first time in over a year that the Bucks were kept off the scoreboard in a Great Lakes Division contest and first time since they dropped the 1-0 heartbreaker in the postseason last July.
