GALLOWAY TWP., N.J. – Lenny Aviles came through in the clutch.

He also played spoiler Tuesday night.

The forward from FC Monmouth scored a goal in the 88th minute to propel his team to a 2-1 victory over Atlantic City FC in that club’s very first home game in The League For Clubs Northeast Conference at Stockton University.

The game was finally completed after some long rain and lightning delays and Aviles – a sophomore-to-be at Rutgers University of the Big Ten Conference – scored off rebound late in the second half.

Aviles’ initial shot was stopped by Atlantic City FC goalkeeper Ryan Moroney but Aviles was there near the doorstep to send home the late go-ahead goal.

FC Monmouth’s defense made it stand as the visitors moved to 4-0-0 on the season with 12 points atop the Northeast Conference.

The team now has a 13-4 scoring edge but not before escaping a tight duel with Atlantic City FC, which fell into fifth place in the conference.

Patrick Shaw opened the scoring for Monmouth with a goal in the 27th minute, beating Moroney (St. Joseph’s University) with a header inside the box following a cross from Aviles.

The lead stood until the 64th minute when Luke McNamee (Monmouth University) pulled his team level at 1-1. The Aces could not carry the momentum, as FC Monmouth scored the late game-winner to remain unbeaten.

Charles Shirmer, who plays college soccer for Anna Maria College, gained the win under the framework for FC Monmouth, which now has a team goals-against-average of 1.00 this season.
