GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Wednesday was truly Vitalis Takawira’s day.
The forward from Midwest United FC recorded the natural hat trick as United cruised past visiting Northern Indiana FC 6-0 in a USL League Two-Great Lakes Division match at Aquinas College.
The Davenport University forward scored in the 24th, 41st and 45th minutes – all in succession – as Midwest United scored four goals before halftime and then added two more tallies after halftime.
Christian Shannon (St. Joseph / Western Michigan University) netted the first goal in the 18th minute while being pushed up on a restart. His tally proved to be the game-winner but just the start of MUFC’s offensive outburst.
Benjamin Adamson (Saginaw Valley State University) scored in the 65th and Charles Elmquist added the sixth goal in the 75th minute to cap the scoring for host Midwest United FC, which improved to 2-2-0 overall and in the Great Lakes Division after starting the season 0-2-0.
Taariq Ganga (Bellevue University) made just two saves for the shutout.
Midwest United FC has now outscored its opposition 9-5 over four games this season and this was the team’s first clean sheet.
Great Lakes Division newcomer Northern Indiana slipped to 0-1-0 and left off the scoreboard in its season opener.
Midwest United FC will host Union FC Macomb on Wednesday, May 28, at the Aquinas College Turf Field.
