CREVE CREUR, Mo. – Last season’s USL League Two runner-up Peoria City opened up the campaign Saturday playing expansion franchise FC Ambush.
The Carp kept up their winning ways.
Peoria City scored twice in less than a four-minute span in the first half to build a 2-0 halftime lead, then held on for a 2-1 road triumph in USL League Two-Great Plains Division play at Missouri Baptist University’s Spartan Field.
Defender Alejandro Valverde (Clarke University) netted the first goal for Peoria City barely into the 18th minute, as his chip shot from some 40 yards out caught the Ambush goalkeeper Alexander Drexler off his line and it sailed high and into the net.
Just minutes later in the 21st minute, Luke Persenico (Clarke University) tallied an assist when his cross into the box was redirected in the mixing bowl by Kevin Mejias (Bradley University) who one-timed a close-range shot into the back of the net.
A foul- and-card plagued second half eventually led to a penalty kick goal by FC Ambush’s Grant Locker in the 75th. Peoria City’s defense held off the late-game comeback to record the season-opening win.
Sami Slimi recorded six saves on seven chances to gain the win in goal for Peoria City (1-0-0).
The Ambush slipped to 0-1-0 overall after their very first game in the USL League Two.
