Napa Valley prevails 4-2 on pens to keep postseason hopes alive
NAPA, Calif. — Napa Valley 1839 FC edged San Ramon FC in a penalty shootout Saturday night to win The League For Clubs NorCal Tournament championship after the sides played to a 1-1 draw.
Napa Valley converted all four of its shots from the spot kicks in the shootout, while San Ramon missed two, giving the hosts a 4-2 advantage in penalties at Napa (Calif.) Justin-Siena High School Dodd Stadium.
Both goals were scored in the first half and remained tied at 1-1 through 90 minutes plus stoppage time of regulation and two 15-minute overtime periods, setting the stage for the shootout.
San Ramon FC took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Roberto Gonzales scored an unassisted goal.
Eight minutes later in the 22nd minute, Luiz Ramirez tied the game when he deposited a penalty kick into the back of the net.
The tightly contested match saw both teams trade goals in regulation. Napa Valley opened the scoring midway through the first half, but San Ramon responded before the break to level the match.
Neither side could break the deadlock in the second half, setting up the decisive shootout.
In the shootout, Napa Valley goalkeeper stopped the second shot and watched another sail over the crossbar. Then Fredrico Barbieri converted his shot from the spot to seal the deal.
Napa Valley, the second seed in the NorCal Tournament, finished 12-2-1 in the regular season and added on three wins in the tournament.
Napa Valley 1839 FC will head to Dallas, Texas, July 24-26 for The League For Clubs National Tournament.
