NIAGARA, N.Y. – Sporing CT keeps finding ways to win.
Whether they are blow outs or close affairs, Sporting CT improved to 11-0-1 on the season Sunday and on the tournament stage.
This time it was a win in the close variety, as Sporting CT rallied back from an early deficit to tame Pennsylvania Classics 2-1 in the Women's Premier Soccer League-East Region finals at Niagara University.
Sporting CT, ranked 13th in the WPSL Power Rankings last issued in late June, posted a 0-0 draw late in the regular season but this victory was the team’s third one-goal win of the season and it jettisons the club into the WPSL National Semifinals July 18 at Oklahoma State University where unranked St. Croix Legacy (9-1-1) awaits for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff.
With two of the better offenses in the country, the two teams only combined for three goals in this showdown.
PA Classics (7-2-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Anaya Lozano sent her shot into the webbing of the net. PA Classics simply couldn’t keep the 63-goal offensive-minded Sporting CT off the board forever.
Tiffany Weimer netted the equalizer just before the halftime break with a tally in the 42nd minute.
Finally, Sporting CT gained the lead for good when Lexi Taylor scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 70th minute.
Sporting CT, a former No. 1-ranked team in the WPSL Power Rankings, is now the highest-ranked team remaining in the tournament. The side is 11-0-1 and boasts some of the best numbers in the entire league entering the national semifinals.
With a 63-8 scoring edge (plus-55), six shutouts, a .917 win percentage, 5.25 goals-per-game and a sterling 0.67 goals-against-average – Sporting CT is proving to be a tough out and has been one of the favorites all season.
PA Classics finishes with a 42-18 scoring edge (plus-24), three shutouts, a 1.39 goals-against-average and 3.24 goals-per-game – but just one win away from the coveted final Four.
