At just 16 years old, Maddy Vennard has already built a soccer journey defined by resilience, growth, and perspective beyond the game.

A dynamic midfielder capable of playing as a six, eight, or ten, Vennard has spent the last 11 years developing her craft—never fully expecting an opportunity like this, but quietly working toward it. Now, that work has paid off with her selection to the DPL International team, set to compete overseas in Lisbon.

Built Through Competition

Playing in the Development Player League (DPL), Vennard has been tested consistently at a high level.

“There’s never an easy game,” she explained. “You have to give 100% every time.”

That level of competition has pushed her development, helping her grow into a versatile and intelligent presence in the midfield. Rather than chasing opportunities elsewhere, Vennard made the intentional decision to stay with her current club, valuing team chemistry and connection above uncertainty.

“With only a couple seasons left, I didn’t know if I’d find the same environment anywhere else,” she said.

That stability has paid off—especially during her time with Nationals, where she describes the past year as the most fun, challenging, and rewarding stretch of her career.

From Doubt to International Stage

When Vennard first received word of her DPL International selection, the moment didn’t feel real.

“I didn’t believe it at first,” she admitted. “I thought there was no way.”

But after confirmation from her coach, excitement quickly followed the disbelief. Soon, she’ll travel to Lisbon, where the team will face clubs like Porto Salvo, Casapia, and Crance, while also training in a professional environment and experiencing the global game firsthand.

The trip aligns perfectly with her school schedule at Anchor Bay High School, allowing her to take full advantage of the opportunity.

A Bigger Vision Beyond Soccer

While soccer has been a major part of her life, Vennard has a clear perspective on her future.

She remains undecided about playing at the collegiate level—not due to a lack of ability, but because of her long-term priorities.

“I want to focus on my education,” she said.

Her interests lie in engineering, with the possibility of pursuing architectural design as a minor—blending her analytical mindset with her artistic ability.

It’s a mature outlook, supported by her family, who recognize both her talent and the importance of balance—especially after everything she’s overcome physically.

Overcoming Adversity

Vennard’s journey hasn’t been without challenges.

After undergoing two meniscus knee surgeries, she faced not just physical recovery, but a significant mental battle.

“There was a time I didn’t love soccer,” she shared. “I kind of blamed soccer.”

Watching teammates play while sidelined tested her mindset, but over time, she found a new perspective—approaching her second recovery with more acceptance and strength.

Now, she uses that experience to help younger athletes navigating similar injuries, turning adversity into leadership.

Defining Moments

Among her favorite memories is a moment that perfectly captures both skill and composure—a district championship win her freshman year, decided by a corner kick by a teammate bent into the upper 90 in a scoreless match.

It’s a reminder of the impact she can make in the biggest moments.

Grounded, Driven, and Authentic

Off the field, Vennard’s personality shines just as much. She’s described as humble, creative, and multi-talented—an accomplished guitar player and artist.

Her lighter side shows too:

  • Favorite meal: Pulled pork sandwich and fries from Sticks in Ludington, plus her grandmother’s yellow cake with chocolate frosting

  • Favorite candy: Kit Kats

  • Pineapple on pizza: “100% yes”

Advice for the Next Generation

If there’s one message Vennard would pass on, it reflects everything she’s experienced:

“Keep pushing through. Keep your head up. The obstacles are part of the journey.”

As she prepares to represent her club and country on the international stage, Maddy Vennard stands as more than just a talented player—she’s a testament to perseverance, perspective, and purpose both on and off the field.
