SAN DIEGO — Aubrey Kingsbury made six saves to earn her 41st career regular season clean sheet as the Washington Spirit battled to a 0-0 draw with San Diego Wave FC on Sunday night at Snapdragon Stadium.
With the result, Washington (7-4-2, 23 points) enters the NWSL’s July break in fourth place. Kingsbury’s shutout ties her with Casey Murphy for fourth-most in league history and makes her just the fourth goalkeeper to record clean sheets against 14 or more different NWSL opponents.
San Diego (7-3-3, 24 points) controlled much of the first half, forcing Kingsbury into an early fingertip save and firing 11 shots before halftime. The Spirit’s best early opportunity came from Gift Monday, who earned a corner kick after a strong run down the flank. Croix Bethune and Gabby Carle also recorded shots before the break, but neither side could break through.
The Spirit made several changes in the second half, including the introduction of Rosemonde Kouassi, Kysha Sylla, and Courtney Brown. Kingsbury made three highlight-reel saves in a 20-minute span to preserve the clean sheet, while Bethune tested San Diego keeper Kailen Sheridan in the 68th minute.
Kate Wiesner made her season debut late, as Washington held off a flurry of Wave chances in the closing minutes to split the points.
The Spirit return to action after the NWSL break when they host Portland Thorns FC at Audi Field on Sunday, Aug. 3.
