SALINE, Mich. – Last season Saline was looking up at Ann Arbor Skyline in the Southeastern Conference-Red Division standings.
Not this year.
Saline wrapped up the eight-school SEC-Red title outright Tuesday night with a game to spare courtesy of a 3-0 shutout of visiting Ann Arbor Pioneer.
Last season Skyline finished 8-1-1 in league play for 25 points, while Saline was the bridesmaids in the conference at 7-1-2 for 23 points.
Saline improved to 16-0-1 overall this season, as the Division 1 top-ranked Hornets continued to impress on both ends of the field. Saline is now 8-0-1 in league play for 25 points, and even if it drops their league finale Thursday against Skyline, the Hornets will still finish ahead of Skyline via total league points. Saline has 25 points and Skyline (6-0-3) has 21 points.
Saline and Skyline will wrap up league play against one another on the Hornets’ home turf at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Against Pioneer, Sienna Snyder finished with a goal and an assist to pace the Hornets. Lydia Zajchowski and Amani Collette also scored for Saline.
Kaylee Mitzel continued her strong showing in goal along with another fine defensive effort from the unheralded back line. Saline has now outscored the opposition 95-4 this season with 14 shutouts.
In fact, Saline has only allowed three schools to even score upon the Hornets, including New Boston Huron (5-2 win), Dearborn (9-1 win) and Ann Arbor Huron (5-1 win). Those two games against New Boston Huron and Dearborn came back on April 3 and April 4, respectively, while since April 7 the Hornets have only allowed one goal in the last 14 games.
Saline’s shutout also marked the team’s sixth straight shutout and 13th clean sheet in the Hornets’ last 14 games.
Defensively, Saline lowered its stellar goals-against-average down to 0.24, while offensively the Hornets have averaged 5.59 goals-per-game.
