KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Kalamazoo Christian is starting to pick up the pace.
The state-ranked Comets, which won the Division 4 state title in 2023 before finishing as the state runner-up last season, moved to 5-0-1 in their last six games with a resounding 7-0 shutout of Lawton at home Wednesday in a Division 4 district semifinals match.
Kalamazoo Christian, now 13-4-2 overall with a Southwestern Athletic Conference-Valley Division title in tow, will host arch-rival Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep at 6 p.m. Friday for the district championship.
Emily Gorton netted the hat trick with an assist to pace the Comets, who have outscored the opposition 21-6 in their last six games and 69-21 overall this season. Avery Lambreth and Maysen Steensma also scored two goals in the route.
Kalamazoo Christian picked up its 10th shutout of the campaign. The Comets are 12-1-1 in their last 14 matches.
Lawton finished 9-7-1 overall.
Kalamazoo Hackett improved to 11-5-1 on the season and advanced with a 2-1 victory over Schoolcraft in the other district semifinals match Wednesday.
Kalamazoo Christian defeated Hackett 3-0 in their only meeting this season back on May 12. The Mets won the league at 7-0-0, followed by Allegan (6-1-0) and Hackett (5-2-0).
