MICHIGAN GIRLS SOCCER: Gull Lake rolls past Plainwell, sets up date with unbeaten Otsego

RICHLAND, Mich. – Ali Bates took the right time to have a career scoring night and that’s in the state tournament.
The junior midfielder from Richland Gull Lake scored five goals Wednesday night in leading the third-ranked Blue Devils to a 6-0 shutout win over Plainwell in a Division 2 district semifinals clash at Gull Lake.
It marked the second hat trick of the season for Bates and it sends Gull Lake into Friday’s district finals on her home turf against unbeaten and No. 8-ranked Otsego (15-0-1).
It marked the second straight year that Gull Lake knocked Plainwell out in the district semifinals round in one of the deepest districts in the state of Michigan.
Tessa Cothern also scored for Gull Lake (18-1-2), which now owns a 72-12 scoring edge and 11 shutouts this season. Maddie Coates picked up three assists, while Kylie Grant, Kilee Halladay and Charley Reiner had single assists for the Blue Devils.
Junior Bella Carr recorded her 11th clean sheet of the season for the Blue Devils, who will host Otsego at 6 p.m. Friday in the district finals of an eight-school district that began with four state-ranked teams. Carr’s defense holds a 0.58 goals-against-average this season.
District finalists Gull Lake and Otsego have a combined 33-1-3 record this season.
The Blue Devils are going after their seventh straight district championship.
Plainwell, which reached the state’s Final Four two years ago, bows out with a 11-4-1 record.
OTSEGO 1, MIDDLEVILLE THORNAPPLE-KELLOGG 0: Haylee Dennany scored midway through the first half Wednesday and the defense made it stand up as the eighth-ranked and unbeaten Bulldogs edged No. 12 Middleville Thornapple-Kellogg 1-0 in this district semifinals clash at Richland Gull Lake.
Zoe Alkire gained the shutout in goal for the Bulldogs, the team’s 11 shutout in 16 games.
Otsego (15-0-1) owns a 75-5 scoring edge this season and lowered its goals-against-average down to 0.32.
Thornapple-Kellogg, the Ottawa Kent Conference Gold Division runner-up which spent plenty of time ranked in the state the past two seasons, bows out of the state tournament with an 12-4-2 overall record.
