MICHIGAN GIRLS SOCCER: Bordogna’s hat trick lifts No. 2 Marian past Cranbrook in 2OT
BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – After losing to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood in last year’s CHSL Bishop Tournament semifinals, Birmingham Marian did not want to taste defeat again against one of its arch-rivals.
Nia Bordogna made sure of that Wednesday evening.
A junior, Bordogna took matters into her own hands in the two rivals’ state tournament showdown as she scored three goals – all off set pieces – to help the second-ranked Mustangs defeat Cranbrook-Kingwood 3-1 in double overtime and advanced to the Division 2 district finals..
Bordogna sent home a free kick in the second half to put Marian up 1-0 before Cranbrook-Kingswood equalized the game on a goal by Paloma Torres.
The game remained tied entering the two full 10-minute overtime periods. Bordogna laced in a penalty kick for what proved to be the game-winner and then converted another free kick outside the box for an insurance tally and the 3-1 lead.
The stout Marian defense shut down Cranbrook Kingswood for most of the game, including the extra seasons.
It marked the third time this season that the Mustangs were able to defeat Cranbrook-Kingswood. Marian defeated Cranbrook 4-1 back on April 24 – the team won the CHSL-Central Division at 4-0-0 – and then faced C-K in the CHSL Bishop Tournament finals on May 17 and came away with a 3-0 shutout in that contest.
Marian will face Farmington Hills Mercy at 4:30 p.m. May 29 at home in a Division 2 district finals. The Mustangs defeated Mercy 1-0 in league play back on May 7 in their previous meeting.
Marain improved to 16-2-1 on the season and have now outscored the opposition 67-10 with 11 shutouts. Both of the Mustangs’ losses this season were against Division 1 state-ranked teams.
Cranbrook-Kingswood finished the campaign with a 4-9-2 record and were outscored 33-12 this season.
