ST. PAUL, Minn. – Kelvin Yeboah stood up in the clutch Tuesday – twice.
Yeboah’s two overtime goals helped Minnesota United douse the shorthanded Chicago Fire 3-1 in a 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals match at Allianz Field.
With the two teams tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Yeboah scored off a cross from Carlos Harvey in the 95th minute for what proved to be the game-winner, then blasted home a penalty kick for a late insurance tally in the 120th minute as part of three unanswered goals by the Loons, who trailed early in the match.
Robin Lad finished off a feed from Anthony Markanivich in the 47th minute that tied the game at 1-1 and later set up Yeboah’s clutch performance in extra time.
The Chicago Fire picked up a shade of bad luck when Omar Gonzalez was issued a red card back in the 25th minute. Still, Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute when Brian Gutierrez buried a penalty kick after a foul in the box.
The Fire simply could not hold onto the lead in the second half down a man and later succumbed in overtime.
Minnesota United outshot Chicago 26-11 in the match overall, including 10-4 with shots on goal and even held a 9-5 edge off cornerkicks. The Loons also held a 60-40 edge on possession and held an 88-percent accuracy on passes.
Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair recorded three saves in four chances to gain the win in goal for Minnesota United. Counterpart Chris Brady recorded seven saves in 10 chances in defeat for Chicago.
Minnesota United will host the winner between Austin FC and San Jose Earthquakes in the semifinals in September.
