DETROIT – Talk about stepping up in the clutch.

A defensive center midfielder, Bennett Quijano – a sophomore-to-be at Calvin University and a Salem High School grad – scored a goal in the second minute of stoppage time and just seconds before the end of regulation to lead Detroit City FC II to a thrilling 1-0 victory Monday over Detroit United at the University of Detroit-Mercy.

The win gave Detroit City FC II the Midwest East Division regular season and tournament championship. The victory also sends DCFCII into the UPSL Midwest regional tournament.

Quijano found enough space in traffic to poke it home and send the DCFCII fanbase into a frenzy with the late-game heroics.

Alexander Heitsch notched the shutout on six saves, the team’s seventh clean sheet of the 2025 spring season. DCFCII’s defense stepped up collectively to shut down Detroit United’s attack for 90-plus minutes before Quijano was able to net the game-winner.

It marked DCFCII’s second win over Detroit United this season, as the Le Rouge also downed Detroit United 2-1 back on June 1.

The win was Detroit City FC II’s eighth victory in a row and a stretch where the side has a 29-3 scoring edge and five shutouts in the last eight games.

Detroit City FC II improves to 10-1-0 on the season and has not lost since a 3-0 road setback to Duka FC on May 18.

Detroit City now owns a 41-6 scoring edge overall this season and seven shutouts overall in 11 games. The side has averaged 3.73 goals-per-game offensively, while the team’s goals-against-average was lowered down to 0.55 with another clean sheet.

Detroit City FC will remain at the University of Detroit-Mercy for its next game, as the side will play host to Chicago Nation in the UPSL national tournament on July 13 at 4 p.m.
