NATIONAL SOCCER NEWS: www.nationalsoccernetwork.com
Things are heating up in the GCL2, with a balance of returning teams and newcomers showing the way. Gulf Coast United is leading the charge in the Magnolia Division with 9 points and a +15 GD, and it looks like Mississippi Blues will be putting pressure on them for the top spot. Their first meeting was a 2-1 win for GCU, and they won't face each other again until the final game of the regular season.
In the Red River Division, Central Louisiana leads with 9 points and has a +9 GD. Red River played Central close, losing 2-3 in their first match-up, but everyone will be trying to chase down the leader.
The Bayou division is shaping up to be a two-way race between BRSC and LA Fire (the Phoenix). Both teams are currently on 6 points, but BRSC handled them easliy in their first meeting, winning 4-0. BRSC also has a game in hand due to a weather postponement.
Last Week’s Results:
Red River 3-3 Shreveport United
Harrison Dudley had a hat trick for Red River.
Southwest LA 0-2 LA Fire
LA Krewe 1-5 BRSC
Five different players scored.
Gulf Coast United 4-1 Hattiesburg
Carson Phillips had a brace.
Central Louisiana 7-1 Twin Cities
Luiz Martins had a brace.
Mississippi Blues 8-1 Invictus
This Week’s Games:
Red River vs Twin Cities; Friday, June 5 at 7:00: Twin Cities came out on top in the first meeting, earning a 1-0 win. They'll need to bounce back after being manhandled by Central LA last week. Expect another close game, but Red River gets points at home.
Hattiesburg vs Mississippi Blues; Saturday, June 6 at 7:15: Hattiesburg has had a tough start, and the Blues will be looking to climb the ladder to challenge GCU. The first meeting was close, but look for the Blues to make a hard push and get a convincing win.
LA Fire vs BRSC; Saturday, June 6 at 7:15: This re-match could put the Bayou race to bed early. If the Phoenix can upset the Capitals, then it's going to be a battle to the end. If BRSC handles things like they did in the first meeting they'll be on cruise control.
Shreveport United vs Central Louisiana; Saturday, June 6 at 7:15: These two teams are long-time rivals, and an upset by Shreveport is always a possibility. But it's more likely that Central will remain focused and take care of business.
LA Krewe vs SW Louisiana; Sunday, June 7 at 4:00: Krewe have not performed particularly well so far, which is a surprise when you consider that their first team leads the Mid South Division of USL League Two. But SWLA is at the very bottom of the table, and I expect the Krewe to get three points here.
