Egypt Rallies Past New Zealand to Take Control of Group G

VANCOUVER, BC — Egypt's wait for a World Cup victory is finally over. Led by another brilliant performance from captain Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs rallied from a halftime deficit Sunday night to defeat New Zealand 3-1 at BC Place, securing the African nation's first-ever World Cup win and moving to the top of Group G.
For much of the first half, however, it looked as though New Zealand might be the side taking control of the group. The All Whites entered the match encouraged by their entertaining draw with Iran and continued to show they belonged on the tournament stage. Their reward arrived before halftime when Elijah Just, already one of Group G's breakout performers, found the opening goal and gave New Zealand a deserved advantage heading into the break.
Egypt struggled to create clear chances during the opening forty-five minutes. Salah was largely contained, and New Zealand's defensive organization forced Egypt into a series of rushed attacks and speculative efforts from distance.
Although, this dynamic changed after halftime. Egypt emerged from the locker room with renewed energy and immediately began pushing New Zealand deeper into its own half. The pressure eventually paid off when Mostafa Zico found the equalizer, bringing Egypt level and shifting momentum firmly toward the Pharaohs.
With the match suddenly open, Salah took over. The Egyptian captain produced a decisive moment of quality shortly after the hour mark, weaving into space before finishing confidently to put Egypt ahead 2-1. The goal sparked celebrations among the Egyptian supporters in Vancouver and left New Zealand chasing the match for the first time all evening.
The All Whites searched for a response and continued to create opportunities on the counterattack, but Egypt's defense held firm. As New Zealand pushed numbers forward in pursuit of an equalizer, the Pharaohs put the match away.
Salah again played a central role, helping create the opportunity that allowed Trezeguet to head home Egypt's third goal and put the match beyond reach. The final whistle soon followed, confirming one of the most significant results in Egyptian football history. Eight years removed from a disappointing World Cup return in Russia and after narrowly missing the 2022 tournament altogether, Egypt finally has a victory to celebrate on the sport's biggest stage.
For New Zealand, the defeat was a frustrating end to a match that began so promisingly. The All Whites remain alive entering the final group matchday, but they will likely need a result against Belgium to keep their tournament hopes alive. Egypt, meanwhile, suddenly finds itself in pole position to win Group G. With four points from two matches and Salah continuing to deliver in the biggest moments, the Pharaohs are now within touching distance of the knockout rounds.
Looking ahead: Group G concludes June 25 with Iran-Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle and Belgium-New Zealand at BC Place in Vancouver. Egypt can secure first place in the group with a victory, while New Zealand must likely defeat Belgium to have a chance at advancing.
