Catholic Central, University Liggett Capture CHSL Championships

Presented by Soccer World Michigan

Championship night in the Catholic High School League delivered two decisive statements. In Rochester Hills, Detroit Catholic Central stormed to a 4-0 victory over Cranbrook-Kingswood to reclaim the Bishop Division crown. Meanwhile in Shelby Township, top-ranked Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett stayed perfect on the year, outlasting Royal Oak Shrine 4-2 to capture the Cardinal Division title. Both champions showcased their firepower and defensive strength, setting the tone as they head into state tournament play next week.

Detroit Catholic Central vs. Cranbrook (Bishop Final)

Detroit Catholic Central captured another Catholic High School League Bishop Division title on Wednesday night, defeating Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood 4-0.

The Shamrocks wasted no time, scoring twice in the opening nine minutes to seize control. Adrian Palushaj volleyed home the opener before Kei Zarco doubled the advantage less than a minute later by finishing a rebound inside the box.

Cranbrook regrouped after the early setback and found some rhythm moving forward, but every counterattack was met by Catholic Central’s defensive anchor Ralu Ibegbu, who consistently disrupted the Cranes’ attempts to break through.

Catholic Central pushed the match out of reach in the second half. Co-captain Grant Mooradian struck early after the break, and Gavin McLenaghan added a fourth to put the title beyond doubt.

With the win, Catholic Central improves to 12-3-3, earning its first Bishop Division crown since 2022. The Shamrocks will meet Troy Athens on Monday before turning attention to the state tournament, where they will open against South Lyon in the first round of districts.

Cranbrook, now 10-2, absorbed only its second loss of the season. The Cranes hold an opening-round bye in district play and will face the winner of Pontiac and Waterford Mott in the semifinals.

University Liggett vs. Royal Oak Shrine (Cardinal Final)

Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, the top-ranked team in Division 4, continued its unbeaten run with a 4-2 victory over No. 5 Royal Oak Shrine in the Catholic High School League Cardinal Division Championship on Wednesday night.

Liggett controlled the match from the start, keeping possession and applying steady pressure on Shrine’s defense. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Brady Ancona finished a quick sequence to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes into the second half, Liam Gady doubled the advantage, putting Liggett firmly in control. The game opened up from there, with both teams trading goals. Brendan Logan scored twice for Liggett in the second half, while Caesar Soma answered both times for Shrine to keep the contest within reach.

Despite Shrine’s quick-strike attack, Liggett’s midfield—anchored by defensive standouts Ollie Cooley and Landon Wysocki—limited opportunities and disrupted Shrine’s rhythm throughout the night.

The win keeps University Liggett perfect at 13-0 on the season. The Knights will close out their regular-season schedule with a few final tune-ups before opening district play against Hope of Detroit Academy next Wednesday.

Royal Oak Shrine, now 16-2, turns its attention to a matchup with Plymouth Christian on Friday before beginning its district tournament against Southfield Manoogian next Thursday.
