YRON CENTER, Mich. – Zion Christian School enters the 2025 season with a new challenge and a touch of nostalgia as longtime head coach Jack Hoekstra prepares for his 15th and final year leading the program.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 12-7-3 campaign in the Alliance League, finishing tied for second place in Division 4 before bowing out in the district final. But after graduating 12 seniors, Zion Christian faces a steep climb to replicate last year’s success.
“We’re going to be leaning heavily on our juniors to step up,” Hoekstra said. “It’s a smaller senior group, but they’ve been a part of one of the winningest runs in school history. Their leadership will be important.”
Among the returners is senior goalkeeper Jack Hoekstra, a third-team all-state selection who has committed to continue his career at Hope College next fall. Defensively, the Mountaineers will look to Jackson Krikke to anchor the back line, while midfield playmakers Isaac Moes and Carter Deutschmann are expected to carry a large share of the workload in possession. Up front, Jack Feenstra will provide scoring ability for an attack searching for consistency.
Despite the roster turnover, Zion Christian brings a motivated junior class eager to establish itself as the next core of the program.
“This group has a lot to prove, but they’re hungry,” Hoekstra said. “We may not have the depth of years past, but the competitiveness and drive are there.”
As the Mountaineers begin their season, the program will also celebrate the legacy of Coach Hoekstra, whose tenure has shaped Zion Christian soccer into a respected small-school contender.
“This year is about competing, growing, and honoring what Coach Hoekstra has built,” Deutschmann said. “We want to make it a memorable one.”
