STOCKTON, Calif. – Utah United was an expansion team in the USL W League this season.
After compiling the league’s best offense during the regular season, Utah United figured it would stick around a while in the postseason.
Two days after ousting FC Olympic 2-1 in the USL W League-Western Conference semifinals on Friday, Utah United was back at it again late Sunday night by topping the Stockton Cargo SC 2-0 at the Stockton (Calif.) St. Mary’s High School-Academica Fields to claim the team’s first Western Conference title and become a rare expansion team to reach the Final Four in the league’s history..
Utah United, now 10-0-1, is two wins from an unbeaten season and a national championship. The side has outscored the opposition 63-6 this season following the 2-0 win over Stockton and now will face Midwest Conference champion Minnesota Aurora next weekend in the USL W League national semifinals.
Against Stockton, Utah United scored two first-half goals and blanketed the Cargo offense for much of the match to claim the shutout – the team’s sixth clean sheet of the 2025 campaign.
Kaylie Chambers notched what proved to be the game winning goal in the 21st minute off an unassisted tally.
Utah United (10-0-1) benefited from a controversial call and Seven Christian buried a penalty kick two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the first half for a 2-0 lead.
Utah United’s defense thwarted every attack that the Cargo could build and held onto the shutout in the end.
United now has a 4-1 scoring edge in the postseason, while overall the team has averaged 5.73 goals-per-game offensively – still the top-rated offense in the entire 93-team USL W League – while the side has allowed just 0.55 goals-per-game.
Haven Empey notched the shutout in goal in the Western Conference finals.
The Stockton Cargo SC lost its first and only game of the season and finish the campaign with an 11-1-2 overall record. The team was unfortunate enough at the end of the first half to have both its head coach (Marek Albert) and the team’s trainer issued a red card.
The Cargo still held a 41-14 overall scoring edge over 14 games this season and ranked in the top 10 in the nation in scoring. Reaching the Final Eight was the furthest the Stockton Cargo has advanced in the USL W League postseason.
