FLINT, Mich. – Defense often wins championships.

If Midwest United FC is able to win their first USL League Two-Great Lakes Division title this season – they can look back at their two performances against the Flint City Bucks as perfect examples.

Midwest United opted to play a five-man backfield Wednesday at Atwood Stadium on the campus of Kettering University and that defensive effort simply stymied the Bucks. On the offensive end, Midwest United scored a pair of counterattack goals and wound up with a 2-0 road victory over Flint City in a key Great Lakes Division showdown.

The Flint City Bucks outshot Midwest United 15-9 in the contest, but Midwest United returned the favor with a 4-3 edge with shots on goal. The Bucks did post a 6-3 edge off cornerkicks but could not do anything in their attack against an inspired Midwest United side.

Midwest United finally broke the stalemate in the 64th minute. Nick Cassiday (University of Michigan) flicked the ball over to Anthony Bowie (Western Michigan University grad) who slotted the ball from the right side and chipped the ball to near the six yard box and Vitalis Takawira (Coker University) headed it home for the 1-0 lead.

Midwest United added an important insurance tally in the 85th minute to take the wind out of the Bucks’ sails. Jonathan Stout (Western Michigan) split two defenders and in a fluid motion cut back to his left before launching a bending left-footed shot that curled up into the upper 90 on the right side that Flint City goalkeeper Jakub Grzesiak (Oral Roberts University) had no chance to stop.

Midwest United now has 25 points and can clinch the league title with a win in its final regular season game next week – which would be its first divisional title.

Bowie and Christian Shannon (Western Michigan) spearheaded the defensive effort for Midwest United (8-3-1), which now has a 27-10 scoring edge this season with four shutouts. The Midwest United FC defense completely frustrated Donavan Phillips, Dominic Ayella and the rest of the Bucks for 90-plus minutes.

Taariq Ganga (Bellevue University) notched the shutout on three saves, as Midwest United FC swept the Bucks for the first time in club history.

Flint City Bucks (6-3-0) only has 18 points with three leagues left and must win out to secure a postseason berth. The Bucks own a 21-9 scoring edge but were shut out for the sec
