FLINT, Mich. – The Flint City Bucks found a way.
Two late goals in stoppage time provided the Bucks with a 2-0 victory in the USL LEague Two Central Conference semifinals at Atwood Stadium at Kettering University.
Donavan Phillips tucked home a rebound after Dominic Ayella penalty kick was saved. Ayella redeemed himself in the waning minutes with a breakaway.
After Matt Dreas was tripped up in the box in a collision, the Bucks were awarded a penalty kick in the 116th minute. Ayella’s shot was initially stopped, but Phillips raced in ahead of his defender and blasted home the rebound from four yards out.
At the 120+4 mark, Ayella picked off a clearance and deposited his breakaway into the back of the web to cap the scoring.
Jakub Grzeziak notched the shutout under the framework – his team’s seventh of the season and fifth individually for Grzeziak. The Bucks (11-3-0) played stout team defense in holding Fort Wayne FC scoreless for 120-plus minutes of regulation and overtime.
Fort Wayne FC finished the season 10-3-1 and with a 27-12 scoring edge but lost to the Bucks in the conference semifinals for the second straight year.
The Bucks advance to the Central Conference finals for the fifth straight season and will play the winner of Minneapolis City SC-Sueno conference semifinals game. The conference finals for both the Central Conference and Eastern Conference will take place at Virtue Stadium in Burlington, Vermont.
