With one of the best defenses, Dothan United now in the Elite Eight
DOTHAN, Ala. – Dothan United may not have won the South Central Division this season in the USL League Two, the side is trying to prove that defense may just win a conference championship or perhaps even a national championship.
After finishing second then-top-ranked Asheville City SC with a 10-2-0 overall record, the side captured back-to-back shutouts July 18-20. Dothan United downed Little Rock Rangers (1-0) on Friday before coming back to defeat Louisiana Krewe 2-0 Sunday at Rip Hewes Stadium – Dothan’s home field – in the Southern Conference semifinals.
The team will play next Friday in the conference finals against Fort Lauderdale United FC.
Super-sub Lawrence Goddard scored twice in the second half, tallying goals in the 48th minute and 90th minute to help Dothan United keep a dream season alive.
Vago Darbub notched the shutout for Dothan United (12-2-0), which now has nine clean sheets and has outscored the opposition 36-6 in 14 games. Oscar Vallejo, William Noecker, Jaden Strumeier and Brian Torre starred defensively for United to claim the second straight postseason shutout.
Again, those numbers did not win a division championship. Asheville City SC was 10-0-2 in the regular season where that side outscored its foes 43-3 with nine shutouts. Asheville City Sc was upset in the Round of 32 by unranked Louisiana Krewe – the same team that Dothan United defeated Sunday night.
Fresh off that upset of No. 1-ranked Asheville City SC, Louisiana Krewe could not garner another head-turner against another one of the top-five defenses in the country. The Krew exit the postseason with a 9-3-2 record and a scoring edge of 29-18.
