NAPLES, Fla. — After a grueling week of travel complications and a hard-fought exit from the U.S. Open Cup, Forward Madison FC (1-0-0, 3 pts) returns to USL League One action this Saturday, March 28. The Flamingos face a daunting task as they travel to the Sunshine State to take on the league-leading and undefeated FC Naples (2-0-1, 7 pts) at Paradise Coast Sports Complex.

The match represents a "clash of momentum": Madison is looking to build on their historic season-opening upset of the 2025 champions, One Knoxville SC, while Naples aims to protect a red-hot defense that has conceded only twice in three matches.

Setting the Scene: From Snow to Sunshine

The "Mingos" arrive in Florida after a logistical nightmare. Following their 2-1 win in Knoxville, the squad dealt with canceled flights and inclement weather that prevented a return home before their Open Cup match against the Flint City Bucks in Michigan.

Despite the travel fatigue, Madison put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell 2-0 to a clinical Bucks side. Now, having finally returned to Wisconsin for a full week of recovery and tactical preparation, Head Coach Matt Glaeser's squad is "rested and recharged" for their second league fixture of the 2026 campaign.

Last Match Recap: Flint City Bucks 2, Forward Madison 0

The Open Cup tie in Michigan started at a lightning pace, with Flint City playing a physical, high-tempo style.

  • First Half: An awkward deflection resulted in an FMFC own goal in the 13th minute. Madison nearly equalized in the 28th when Annor headed a cross just over the bar.

  • Second Half: Madison came out swinging, with Edwards missing narrowly on two occasions. Gebhard appeared to score a tap-in in the 51st minute, but the ball was ruled out of play.

  • The Clincher: Flint City found their second through a substitute in the 63rd minute. Despite dominating possession and earning multiple late set pieces, the Flamingos couldn't find the net. The night ended on a sour note as Humphrey saw a red card in stoppage time.

Keys to the Match: The "Cleated Rivalry"

1. Former Friends, New Foes: This match features a heavy dose of familiarity. FC Naples’ roster includes two key former Flamingos: midfielder Aiden Mesias and the red-hot Chris Garcia. Garcia has been a focal point for Naples early this season, already tallying a goal and two assists. Madison must find a way to neutralize their former teammates to keep the Naples attack at bay.

2. The 10K Milestone: Forward Madison veteran Derek Gebhard is on the brink of history. He enters the match just 41 minutes shy of hitting the 10,000 regular-season minute milestone. Expect the "Mr. Madison" of the roster to lead by example as the club navigates a difficult away environment.

3. Breaking the "Naples Wall": FC Naples has been statistically dominant in defense, recording two clean sheets in their first three games. Madison’s attack, led by the creative efforts of Gebhard and Edwards, will need to be clinical to beat Naples' goalkeeper Edward "Lalo" Delgado.
